Our Elementary School is participating in a “No Sweets Week” with sponsorship from Kroger and Reality Bikes. Students are challenged to live one week without sweet foods. Both of my sons are participating.
The contest specifically asks about:
- Sugar sweetened soft drinks
- Ice Cream
- Sugar Sweetened Cereal
- Sports Drinks
- Fruit Juices labeled as “Fruit Punch”
- Cookies, Candy and Cake
I really appreciate the school is participating in programs designed to help make our children better consumers and understand their own diet and nutrition better. It’s raised several questions from Aidan about what’s ingredients are in the food he eats everyday!
I’d love to extend it further – since I think most parents have found there’s plenty of sugar to go around in less obvious places: kids yogurt, granola bars and a whole group of snacks that didn’t make the list.
Of course, anything to start with is incremental to improving their lifestyle.
