One of my goals for 2012 is to get faster in sprinting distances. While I’ve done some intervals in the course of my distance running training, I’ve never set out to specifically train for sprints.
Sprints are, obviously, important in soccer. Saturday morning I got out early in my yard to work on some sprints. Since my sprints are most applicable to soccer, I trained on grass in cleats.
I combined sprints (I used a 20 yard distance) with several plyometric exercises – Frog Jumps, Squat Jumps, and Skips. The goal of these exercises is to improve the explosive ability of my legs and speed my sprints. I alternated sprinting and the plyometric exercises. I also did back peddling to help improve my agility on that movement.
I worked for a total of 15 minutes. I’m planning to work this weekly in increasing duration, and hopefully improve speed by the end of the spring.
